Courage the Cowardly Dog

The Boogeyman is the upcoming character in the series Courage the Cowardly Dog, and is based on the legend of The Bogeyman.

Appearance[]

His is a hideous goblin-like creature that liked wearing long black hooded robes, and when possessing Eustace Bagge, he caused him to wear a mask which resembled the monster's face.

Personality[]

The Boogeyman was a cruel, sadistic, evil monster, possibly a shape shifter, as he looked different in each incarnation. A monster that is designed as a tool to scare children into good behavior or to protect them from harm: the Bogeyman himself is a formless being that can take any shape the storyteller wishes though he tends to be a grotesque humanoid with a tendency to hide under beds, in closets and other dark places. The Bogeyman is said to only go after naughty children and his punishments are said to vary from mischievous pranks such as pulling hair, biting toes or shaking beds (akin to a poltergeist) or more malevolent behavior such as manifesting as horrible creatures to scare the child or even going as far as kidnapping the child and taking them away to his shadowy realm to an undisclosed fate (though he is often said to eat them).

Folklore[]

is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. This monster has no specific appearance, and conceptions about it can vary drastically from household to household within the same community; in many cases, it has no set appearance in the mind of an adult or child, but is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. Parents may tell their children that if they misbehave, the bogeyman will get them. Bogeymen may target a specific mischief—for instance, a bogeyman that punishes children who suck their thumbs—or general misbehavior, depending on what purpose needs serving. In some cases, the bogeyman is a nickname for the Devil. Bogeyman tales vary by region. The bogeyman is usually a masculine entity, but can be of either gender, or simply be androgynous.
